Why City NEED to Win The Carabao Cup
Amar Zukancic
This season Pep and City NEED to win the Carabao Cup. While a lot of people may not see the upside, there is so much to gain from City winning this trophy. This used to be our trophy. We won it 6 times in an 8 year span from 2013/14 to 2020/21, with Pep winning 4 in a row from 2017/18 to 2020/21. All this sustained success in the competition, yet now we are looking at 5 years without a semi final appearance, much less a trophy win. We’ve had some embarrassing exits in this competition, losing to the likes of West Ham, Southampton, and Newcastle in the earlier rounds of the cup. This used to be a trophy we won for fun, yet in the past half decade it's one we haven't taken seriously.
We need to win this, we need to win a trophy. We haven't won a trophy since the 2024 Community Shield, but have not won a major trophy since the 2023/24 Premier League title. There is a severe lack of silverware in terms of City standards in this squad. There are many players, coaches, and administrators currently at City who haven't sniffed any silverware and this is our chance to change that. You can't win the Premier League or Champions League mid season, but you can win the League Cup. Players like Cherki and O’Reilly haven't won any trophies in a long time or at all. Players like Reijders, Donnarumma, and Nico Gonzalez have won trophies, but not in England. Players like Doku, Gvardiol, and Nunes have won trophies, but weren't a big part of the squad at the time. Pep Lijnders and Kolo Toure just joined Pep’s staff and haven't won a trophy at City yet. And Viana is 6 months into the job so he hasn't won yet. This is our chance to change that. Think of the impact that the Carabao Cup win had for the Centurion Team. That was a team who hadn't won a trophy in two years, and Pep had gone a year and a half at City trophyless, but that game changed everything. It got a trophy under the belt of Sane, Jesus, Mendy, Ederson, Walker, Bernardo, and Pep himself, and it opened the flood gates for the Pep Era. This season could be the same in that it can give all these players that winning experience and medal around their necks. It would also be well earned. We did a great job of disposing of Swansea and Brentford, and next up we have a tough two legged tie with Newcastle. If we beat them like we should, then we have a potential final at Wembley against Arsenal. If not Arsenal it's Chelsea, so it is a tough road regardless. If we can beat Arsenal to another trophy, and this time directly in a cup final… it would be gigantic.
City needs this. It's a perfect chance to add another trophy to the cabinet, get one on Arsenal, and kickstart us even more in the title race and in the Champions League. Hopefully we can reclaim the trophy that is rightfully ours and bring the Carabao Cup back home to The Etihad.
